These Are a Few of My Favorite Things!

Well it seems the gloves once again came off for the Chicken Block Lotto, and a new champion has been crowned. So let’s put aside any hurt feelings, bruised egos or shattered dreams of sleeping under a chicken quilt and let’s put on our mittens…it is winter after all!

The January block lotto is brought to us by the amazing talents of Lorna McMahon. You may be familiar with her blog, Sew Fresh Quilts, and many of her modern quilt blocks of animals, the woods and everything in between. When I saw her Winter Mittens quilt block and instructions posted on her website I knew this would be the perfect way to kick off Block Lotto in the new year! The winner for January’s Block Lotto will be drawn at our virtual meeting on January 14th. An email with a link to register your complete blocks will be sent out prior to the meeting. Winter Mittens is a 12″ block and made using traditional piecing methods.

Using the instructions on Sew Fresh Quilts, we will be making the Winter Mittens block for our January Block Lotto drawing. For the background please use a white on white print fabric such as the Better Basics Tiny Houndstooth White available at Blue Bar Quilts, or

our friends at The Electric Needle also have this Mini Madness Hashmark – White on White print. Either would be perfect for this block!

The mittens themselves can be anything you like, but please make them in pairs. The yardage requirements, cutting and piecing instructions are all included in the Sew Fresh Quilts Winter Mittens instructions. As always, you don’t need to trim the blocks when you are done. Happy Piecing and we will see you in January!
