February block lotto – whirlwind

The block lotto for our February 14, 2019 meeting will be a whirlwind block. And the best part of this tutorial? It makes 2 blocks! So there isn’t really a background, because that fabric becomes the feature in the second block. Just pick two that work together 🙂 Use this tutorial from SewCanShe for the whirlwind block that will finish 12″ (12.5″ unfinished). And since Pantone just announced that the color of the year for […]

December Block lotto – Vector planes

This month I’m using a less complex paper-pieced pattern that can be found on the Modern Quilt Guild website – you’ll need to log in as a member to access the Vector pattern found here. (If you have problems with national site login, contact treasurer Catherine Van Hove) While you’re on the MQG site, poke around a little bit: There are some amazing resources on the national site, and you’ve already paid for access to them! […]

November block lotto – chickens

You don’t think I’m just forcing you to make blocks I love, do you??!? Because this month we’re all going to make CHICKENS!! I saw this block posted on Quilty Love and I kinda lost my mind. I knew it would be so much fun in a mix of styles and fabrics.   Here’s the tutorial to use for the blocks. It’s not a square – it ends up 7″ x 8″ unfinished. Low-volume fabric (print or solid, […]

October block lotto – Halloween

It was recommended that since this will be our October 11 meeting, perhaps the next block lotto theme should be Halloween. And who am I to deny your use of happy skulls? Well, I won’t! Make any block, in any colors. Just so long as it feels like Halloween, and it it’s a 12″ block (12.5″ unfinished). Show me your best spooky! For every block you bring, you’ll get one entry to win the whole lot […]

Sept block lotto – selvages

Sorry I have to miss the August meeting and won’t get to see your awesome community of house blocks, but I’m hoping there will be a lot of pictures. Because I won’t be there, I’m also announcing the September block lotto early. For the September 13, 2018 meeting, the block lotto theme will be SELVAGES! Make any block, in any configuration, and any colors. Feel free to add other non-selvage fabrics too – but somehow feature […]

July 2018 Meeting Recap

We hope your summer has been heavy on crafting time, umbrella filled drinks and light on mosquito bites!   We had a wonderful turn out for our July meeting.  We had 39 active members and 13 guests.  Wow, it is really great to see so many familiar faces laughing and sharing with so many new faces.   Here is your recap of the July MMQG Meeting: Wendy F. announced that there will be a special […]

August block lotto – In the neighborhood

Let’s celebrate the amazing MMQG community we’ve built – with a block lotto full of houses for the August 9, 2018 meeting! Build whatever kind of house you want. Make it simple or complex. Realistic or whimsical. It can look like your house, or your fantasy house, or just some random house. Wonky or precise. Applique, pieced, paper pieced, or some combination. Make one block, or make a bunch – you’re in the drawing once […]

June 2018 Meeting Recap

Happy Summer Everyone! Here’s what happened at the June MMQG Meeting: For the members participating in the post card swap, Dayna and Gail provided samples and spoke of different techniques and interfacing they like.  They both mentioned “stiff stuff” which can be found at your local quilt shop.  There are lots of tutorials online if you need help with construction. Reminder:  The Quilt Expo submission deadline is June 30th. There is a new vendor policy […]

July block lotto – pineapple at the pool

This month for block lotto I’m offering a bit of a freedom, with just a few rules. Let’s make pineapple blocks! I’m not going to give you a pattern or even a tutorial – there are a million of them out there, so warm up your Googler. Make any of the variations or versions – just end up with an 8″ finish block (8.5″ unfinished). To unify things just a bit, let’s go with a color […]

June block lotto – juicy Ohio Star

For the June 2018 block lotto, we’re doing a traditional Ohio Star block that finishes 10.5″ (11″ unfinished). I have a collection of 5″ charm squares I want to use, and those pre-cuts work well for this size: each block element (just squares and hourglasses) will need to be trimmed to 4″ before assembly to make the correct finished size block. There are a million tutorials on Ohio Star blocks, but the Missouri Star Quilting […]
