Sept block lotto – selvages

Sorry I have to miss the August meeting and won’t get to see your awesome community of house blocks, but I’m hoping there will be a lot of pictures. Because I won’t be there, I’m also announcing the September block lotto early. For the September 13, 2018 meeting, the block lotto theme will be SELVAGES! Make any block, in any configuration, and any colors. Feel free to add other non-selvage fabrics too – but somehow feature […]

July 2018 Meeting Recap

We hope your summer has been heavy on crafting time, umbrella filled drinks and light on mosquito bites!   We had a wonderful turn out for our July meeting.  We had 39 active members and 13 guests.  Wow, it is really great to see so many familiar faces laughing and sharing with so many new faces.   Here is your recap of the July MMQG Meeting: Wendy F. announced that there will be a special […]

August block lotto – In the neighborhood

Let’s celebrate the amazing MMQG community we’ve built – with a block lotto full of houses for the August 9, 2018 meeting! Build whatever kind of house you want. Make it simple or complex. Realistic or whimsical. It can look like your house, or your fantasy house, or just some random house. Wonky or precise. Applique, pieced, paper pieced, or some combination. Make one block, or make a bunch – you’re in the drawing once […]

June 2018 Meeting Recap

Happy Summer Everyone! Here’s what happened at the June MMQG Meeting: For the members participating in the post card swap, Dayna and Gail provided samples and spoke of different techniques and interfacing they like.  They both mentioned “stiff stuff” which can be found at your local quilt shop.  There are lots of tutorials online if you need help with construction. Reminder:  The Quilt Expo submission deadline is June 30th. There is a new vendor policy […]

July block lotto – pineapple at the pool

This month for block lotto I’m offering a bit of a freedom, with just a few rules. Let’s make pineapple blocks! I’m not going to give you a pattern or even a tutorial – there are a million of them out there, so warm up your Googler. Make any of the variations or versions – just end up with an 8″ finish block (8.5″ unfinished). To unify things just a bit, let’s go with a color […]

Happy Spring everyone!   Here’s what you missed at the May MMQG Meeting: There are some exciting things happening in our community. First, hopefully you have seen the email from our President, Dayna.  If not, here is a recap: We are doing a 3-way modern quilted postcard swap with the Denver Metro MQG and the Salt Lake MQG.     In short, you will make and send 2 postcards and receive 2 postcards. June block lotto – juicy Ohio Star

For the June 2018 block lotto, we’re doing a traditional Ohio Star block that finishes 10.5″ (11″ unfinished). I have a collection of 5″ charm squares I want to use, and those pre-cuts work well for this size: each block element (just squares and hourglasses) will need to be trimmed to 4″ before assembly to make the correct finished size block. There are a million tutorials on Ohio Star blocks, but the Missouri Star Quilting […]

May block lotto – side stripe, aqua/lilac

As I teased at the April meeting, the block lotto for May requires you to log in to the national Modern Quilt Guild website to get the instructions for this month’s block. I chose the block they featured in February – the side stripe by Renee Tallman. Use the measurements in the pattern (no wonky this time), and let’s work through Step 5 (where you trim the block to 6.5″ square) and then STOP. Don’t […]

April block lotto – candy bento box

Here are the instructions for the block lotto for our April 12, 2018 meeting. I changed my mind slightly on the color palette – let’s not use white, and instead mix these spring pastels with CHOCOLATE!   The block instructions can be found here. Don’t sew the quadrants together, though – let’s leave them in quarter-block units that will be 6.5″ unfinished. Where the tutorial’s pictures show white, substitute BROWN. Use the pastels for all […]
